John Meade Haines was born in 1924 in Norfolk, Virginia. From 1938-1941 he attended St. John's College in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. After being discharged, he attended the National Art School in Washington, D.C. From 1948-1949 he attended American University in Washington, D.C., and from 1950-1952 he attended Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art in New York City. The Poetry Society of Alaska was incorporated in March 1962. Its goals were to inspire, instruct and inform Alaskans about the basics of writing poetry and to stimulate about the basics of writing poetry, and poetry contests. The Society disbanded on 9/10/84.
