John Meade Haines was born in 1924 in Norfolk, Virginia. From 1938-1941 he attended St. John's College in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946. After being discharged, he attended the National Art School in Washington, D.C. From 1948-1949 he attended American University in Washington, D.C., and from 1950-1952 he attended Hans Hofmann School of Fine Art in New York City.
